Birds Encounters in Kenya

If you are familiar with my photography, then you know that I have started to have a little thing for birds. The more encounters I have the more they just fill my heart.

The other day I decided I wanted to put one of each breed of birds I encountered from 2025 into a folder to start keeping track. This then led to thinking I should save them in my Merlin app and then I will organize my eBird. If you don't know what Merlin is, it is a fantastic app designed by the Cornell Lab to help you identify birds by either the sound they make or their photo. It is fun to walk into a forest and put the sound recording on to see what birds are currently hanging out there. I would highly recommend having this app on your phone and become familiar with the feathered friends who make your town their temporary or permanent home. Or, to have on your holidays to discover new birds not seen in your area. https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/

I haven't played with eBird yet but there you can get more details about your birds plus when you add your sightings you are helping bird research. Here's the website https://ebird.org/ . This will be an activity I will do in the winter when it is cold and blustery outside.

This time last year I was in Kenya for 3 weeks. What a wonderful trip that I am still reliving. As I started going through my pictures I realized I had a few bird encounters where I was staying around Kisumu, Narok and Diani Beach. They weren't always the most colourful encounters but definitely different birds than I have seen at home.

I decided to just put a gallery together here of the birds I met while in Eastern Africa.

(Actually I wrote this Birds in Kenya post back in December and completely forgot to post it. It was a great social month for me! haha)

I look forward to meeting new birds this year...I just haven't planned any trips yet. Where are some places you would recommend I visit to see some beautiful birds. I have been to Costa Rica and I would love to go back one day. Please write in the comments.

Or, I invite you to read my blog post I wrote last March about the birds and wildlife encounters I have seen in Okotoks called "Wildlife Photography in Okotoks"

I invite you to take a look at my shop.

I have a handful of calendars left. It's not too late. The price is now $25.00.

I also have many cards with my favourite bird encounters on them.

Are you on Instagram? Me too www.instagram.com/rikki_neukom_photography

You can also find me on Substack where I break down pictures I have taken and share why I took the picture and edited it a certain way. I invite you to subscribe.

Wishing you a beautiful day
